The Washington Navy Yard is home to the Chief of Naval Operations, headquarters for the Naval Historical Center, and headquarters for the Marine Corps Historical Center. It is the Navy’s oldest shore establishment and has been in operation since the early 1800s. Benjamin Stoddart, the first Secretary of the Navy, watched over the construction of Washington Navy Yard between 1798 and 1809. The Yard is located on the Anacostia River and has become the Navy’s largest ship-building and ship-fitting facility.
Asbestos Exposure
Many veterans stationed at the Yard, as well as shipyard workers, may have been exposed to asbestos. Because nearly all industries involved using asbestos through the late ‘70s, there is a very good chance any employee of the Yard worked with this material. Manufacturing guns, ship fittings, and more used asbestos. Workers also probably had asbestos lined gloves, bibs, and overalls. Clothing meant to protect workers from molten steel may have given them an asbestos-related disease.
If you are a veteran exposed to asbestos at the Yard, you may have developed mesothelioma, a very serious form of cancer that attacks the lining of some major organs and the abdominal cavity.
The experienced mesothelioma attorneys at Brown | Kiely, LLP are accepting cases of veterans who developed mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure at the Washington Navy Yard. Please contact our Baltimore law office today to schedule a no-cost, no-obligation consultation.
