A recent study by researchers at the Case Western Reserve University and the Georg-Speyer-Haus shows that the Asian spice turmeric may have an ability to slow the growth of mesothelioma tumors. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which has been proven to be an effective antioxidant and have effective anti-inflammatory properties.
In the study, the scientists found that the use of curcumin slowed or even stopped the growth of mesothelioma cells. The scientists are nearing patient trials and are hoping for positive testing.
The current issue is that a significant amount of curcumin isn’t absorbed when turmeric is simply consumed so the scientists are trying to create a form of curcumin that could be absorbed into the blood stream.
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that attacks an estimated 3,000 Americans per year. Its main cause is the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos was used in a variety of commercial applications in the past and is still used in certain practices now, including vehicle brakes. Oftentimes, sufferers of mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos at work without protection or warning from their employers.
