Research teams from the Catalan Institute of Oncology and Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (ICO-IDIBELL) in Spain believe they have found a better way to provide personalized treatment for those suffering from mesothelioma.
Rather than study cancer progression by implanting random cancer samples into laboratory mice, these researchers are implanting cancer samples from specific patients into a specific mouse.
The belief is that they can monitor how the cancer progresses both within the patient and the mouse at the same time, allowing them to try different treatments on the mouse to determine how they would affect the patient.
The researchers are also able to reproduce the stages the tumor will go through and predict how the tumors will respond to varying treatments in a specific patient.
Mesothelioma is a rare form of terminal cancer caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos was used in a wide variety of commercial industries for the last century, but restrictions were placed on its use in 1989. Though the restrictions were put in place in the 80s, the dangers of asbestos exposure were made known to employers as early as the 1930s.
If an employer knew of the dangers of asbestos exposure, but didn’t take the proper steps to protect you from it, they can be found negligent and you may be entitled to a cash settlement. Our Baltimore asbestos claim attorneys at The Law Firm of Matthew E. Kiely can assist you with this process. Call us today at (410) 625-9330 to find out how we can help you with your case.
