Once you are diagnosed with mesothelioma, there are a few options you have for treatment. Your treatment options will be dependent on the stage at which your mesothelioma was caught. Other factors your doctor will consider when determining which treatment method may be right for you include:
- Size of the tumor
- Location of the tumor
- If the cancer has spread to lymph nodes or other organs
- Your health
- Your personal preferences
If your cancer is at an earlier stage, treatment is more likely to have better long term results. Later stage mesothelioma can be treated, but is unlikely to be cured.
Surgery and chemotherapy are the most common types of treatment for mesothelioma. Surgery is used to remove part of the pleural lining of the lungs, where the asbestos fibers lodge themselves. Chemotherapy can be used to slow the growth of the cancer. There are also treatments to help lessen the side effects.
