Mesothelioma can often go undiagnosed for long periods of time, even decades as it sits in latency in your body. If you worked with asbestos, you may have inhaled it without even realizing it. Asbestos was used in a multitude of applications because it’s a very versatile, naturally occurring resource that is extremely heat-resistant.
When asbestos particles are inhaled, they can embed themselves in the linings of several of your organs, causing the cells to die and tumors to form.
Asbestos can cause the following types of mesothelioma:
- Pleural mesothelioma – cancer of the lining of the lungs
- Peritoneal mesothelioma – cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity
- Pericardial mesothelioma – cancer of the lining of the heart
- Testicular mesothelioma – rarest form of mesothelioma that affects the lining of the testicles
Each type of mesothelioma has similar symptoms. Nearly all of them include feelings of fatigue. Pleural mesothelioma can cause shortness of breath, pain in the chest, fluid in the lungs, weight loss, and even the coughing up of blood.
Peritoneal mesothelioma can cause a fluid build-up in the abdomen, weight loss, obstructions in the bowel, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Pericardial mesothelioma may cause chest pain and shortness of breath. Testicular mesothelioma is the rarest of all mesothelioma types and can cause a buildup of fluid in the testicles which may be painful.
