After witnessing that a genetically-altered strain of measles worked to remove cancerous cells from a Petri dish, as well as in lab rats, the Mayo Clinic ran a trial to see if it would work in a human.
The Mayo Clinic has been working in combination with the National Cancer Institute to determine if the measles virus, administered at the proper levels, could rid one’s body from cancerous cells.
Measles works by using the tumors as hosts and attaching to them for replication, which eventually causes them to die.
In a recent clinical trial, a patient suffering from widely-spread blood cancer was administered a massive dose of the genetically-altered measles virus. The dosage worked and the patient went into remission.
In a current clinical trial by Dr. Tobias Peikert, the Mayo Clinic will try to administer the measles virus directly to the pleural cavity of a patient with pleural mesothelioma and will document the results.
While the successful trial sent the patient with blood cancer into remission is exciting news, the Mayo Clinic cautions that it’s only one successful case. Either way, they are attempting to see if the treatment may work to treat mesothelioma in the future.
