All types of asbestos are hazardous to your health. Regardless of the type of asbestos used at your job site, in your home, in products or elsewhere, steps should be taken to warn you when asbestos is present and to prevent you from exposure.
Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring minerals, namely:
- Chrysotile (white asbestos)
- Crocidolite (blue asbestos)
- Amosite
- Tremolite
- Actinolite
- Anthophyllite
All types of asbestos can cause mesothelioma and other health problems.
Chrysotile is the most commonly used type of asbestos. Chrysotile is the only type of asbestos with curly fibers. Studies show it takes greater exposure to chrysotile to develop mesothelioma and other health problems, possibly because the curly, flexible fibers are easier for your lungs to expel.
The remaining five types of asbestos are characterized by long, straight fibers. Crocidolite in particular is highly carcinogenic and considered by many to be one of the most dangerous types of asbestos.
