There have been some amazing and very involved mesothelioma treatments that have been recently being implemented, so our Baltimore asbestos claim attorneys have put together a three part series to bring them to light.
In part one, we discussed a surgery in which physicians use a procedure called a Pleurectomy/Decortication (P/D) surgery to remove the lining of the lungs and all tumors in patients suffering from pleural mesothelioma.
Aggressive Treatment # 2
In addition to performing a P/D procedure, there is a physician that is testing a new way to close the chest cavity after the surgery that may prove even more successful for mesothelioma sufferers. This physician, Dr. Loic Lang-Lazdunski, is performing a povidone-iodine wash of the chest cavity after surgery before he closes the surgical incision. Povidone-iodine is an antiseptic typically used prior to surgery, but Dr. Lang-Lazdunski is finding successful results using it as a post-surgical wash as well.
Testing this procedure on 102 mesothelioma patients showed that all of these patients’ life-expectancies increased. One year after surgery, 94.5% were still alive; two years after surgery, 76.5% were still alive and five years after surgery, 30.7% were still alive.
This procedure is still in its very early stages and still needs further clinical testing, but may be a way for mesothelioma sufferers to find some relief from a currently incurable disease.
What is Mesothelioma and How Can Our Baltimore Attorneys Help You?
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that typically attacks the lining of the lungs and is caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos is used in multiple applications and was found to be harmful in the 1930s. If your employer allows or allowed you to be exposed to asbestos without protection, then you may entitled to compensation for your disease.
