Asbestosis is a respiratory disease caused by asbestos exposure. Inhaled asbestos fibers can cause scarring inside of the lungs. Once scarred, your lungs will no longer be able to expand properly with air, resulting in symptoms including:
- Chest pain
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Tightness in the chest
Unfortunately, once scarred, your lungs will not be able to heal themselves, nor is there a cure for asbestosis.
Asbestosis cannot be cured, but it can be treated. Your doctor will need to remove lung secretions to help alleviate symptoms. This may be done through medications, postural drainage, chest percussion and vibration. You may also require an oxygen mask and, in some cases, a lung transplant to function at even a fraction of the level you did prior to contracting this disease.
