A new process is being adapted by surgeons that helps them to locate cancerous cells easier so they can be easily removed. The process was tested by doctors at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. They claim that 20-50% of patients that have cancer surgery have cancer cells return, largely because some cancerous cells get left behind during surgery.
Using indocyanine green (ICG), a nontoxic, FDA-approved dye that is used in fluorescent imaging procedures, doctors can visualize the cancerous cells better during surgery. ICG concentrates in tumor tissue stronger than normal tissues making it easy to differentiate them.
While the dye has only been used on patients with lung cancer, the hope is to be able to use it for all cancers, including mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma attacks the linings of the lungs, heart, and abdomen and is caused by exposure to asbestos.
